Parable of the Prodigal Son

The Reality of Free Will: The father allowed his son to leave and make his own mistakes. Similarly, God gives us the freedom to choose our own paths, even if they lead to hardship.

Sin Leads to Emptiness: The son's pursuit of pleasure in a "far country" eventually left him morally and physically bankrupt. Turning away from God always leads to isolation and misery.

The Importance of Humility: The turning point in the story is when the son "comes to his senses". He humbles himself, takes accountability for his actions, and resolves to return home.

Unconditional Grace: The father didn't wait for his son to reach the front porch; he ran, embraced, and kissed him while he was still a "long way off". This reveals a Desiring God view of God: He does not hold grudges or wait for us to clean ourselves up before he shows us love.

Restoration and Honor: The father restored the son completely, giving him the best robe, sandals, and a ring (symbols of sonship and authority). God forgives completely and restores our dignity.

Joy in Heaven: The father declared his son was "dead and is alive again". Just as heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents, we are called to celebrate the redemption of others.
